Your Golf Tour Start Date…Leaked?
June 2 Update: More info was released in the Major Cut videos which dropped last week, with George saying that they would release the Major Cut at Shinnecock (which has been filmed) first, then YGT. Grant subsequently contradicted him by saying YGT would come out after ‘this’ Major Cut. Make up your own mind on that one, but George seemed a lot more confident on the details.
Whether by design or not, a rough start date for Your Golf Tour appears to have been revealed. Grant Horvat and the Bryan Bros have been tight-lipped about when the tour would actually begin, with its exact timing a notable omission from an otherwise detailed video released last week. But Instagram has come to the rescue.
It started when Luke Kwon posted a video of himself hitting balls at the range, accompanied by a caption which stated ‘Preparing for the first round of YGT…’. Given Kwon’s apparent penchant for a sleep-in, one could only imagine that first round mustn’t be far away.
But a couple of hours later, Ryan Ruffels officially let the cat out of the bag. Whether accidentally, on purpose, or accidentally on purpose, the Aussie posted a story immediately following his appearance at the Myrtle Beach Classic which included, among other things, the following statement: ‘YGT starts next week’. No official statement has yet been made, but reading between the lines it would appear as though YGT starts next week.
Of course, Your Golf Tour is not a regular golf tournament and will not be streamed live, so while the competition might be starting next week, we won’t be immediately in on the action. One would imagine, however, that once each tournament is complete, they would want to produce and release the videos as soon as possible to prevent any more little Instagram slip-ups, though it would also be no surprise to see them give it a little marketing push for a couple of weeks before hitting publish.
Ruffels himself arrives at Pursell Farms in strong form, having just finished tied for 46th at the Myrtle Beach Classic – his first PGA Tour start in nearly four years – after leading the field at one point during the second round. He beat several other members of the YGT roster for that spot at the Q at Myrtle Beach qualifying event, meaning a decent chunk of the field arrives with some competitive rust already shaken off.
The first event at Pursell Farms will also include Draft Night, at which the four captains – Horvat, George Bryan, Wesley Bryan and Brad Dalke – will select their teams from the remaining 12 players.
For those who aren’t across the full details of Your Golf Tour, the format for the first three events involves three rounds across 18 holes, split across three different YouTube channels. Round one – nine holes of scramble – airs on Horvat's channel. Round two – nine holes of alternate shot, with each captain benching one player in favour of a wildcard – airs on the Bryan Bros channel. The two leading teams after 18 holes then face off in five 1v1 matches, with that final round airing on the newly created Your Golf Tour channel.
Prize money for each of the first three events sits at $500,000, split among the four teams with $250,000 going to the winners. The tour then concludes at Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas with $1 million on the line in an individual stroke play event.
We'll update this article when an official date is confirmed, but if Ruffels and Kwon are to be believed, the wait isn't long now.
