Wesley Bryan Falls Short in Final Bid For British Open Spot

Wesley Bryan has failed in his last-chance bid for a spot at the 2026 British Open, falling six shots short at the inaugural Last-Chance Qualifier at Royal Birkdale.

Wes started slow with a bogey at the first, and though he was still within reach three shots back after nine holes, the gap only widened from there. The younger member of the Bryan Bros ended the day with five bogeys and a pair of birdies for a four-over round of 74.

Bryan's place in the 12-man field came about after a tight finish at Final Qualifying the week prior. He and brother George were both firmly in the mix heading into the closing stages, and Wesley needed only a par at the last to force his way into a playoff for one of the qualifying spots. A missed putt from about eight feet, however, saw him bogey the last and left him a single shot in arrears of the all-important top five.

But where that would have previously seen his Open ambitions end, new rules implemented this year gave him one more shot. Under new criteria the R&A introduced in December, players who fall just one shot short at Final Qualifying earn a spot in a newly created Last-Chance Qualifier, giving them a second run at reaching the Open field.

The event was staged for the first time this year, with a single qualifying place on offer from the 12-player field at Royal Birkdale. This additional qualification route has provided an extra storyline and more on-course action for fans during Open week, essentially kicking festivities off a couple of days earlier than they would have otherwise.

It proved to be a reasonably difficult day on the course for the 12 qualifiers, with only two of them finishing it under par. Finishing on top was Englishman Joe Dean, who ended the day at -2, a solitary shot ahead of Andrew Wilson and another ahead of Aldrich Potgieter. An eagle on 14 proved decisive for Dean, who hung on by the barest of margins courtesy of a clutch up-and-down on 18. He’ll make his third appearance at The Open, two years after finishing in a tie for 25th at the event.

The rest of the field included a mix of players with Open experience and others chasing a first appearance. Aside from the aforementioned top three, each of Adri Arnaus, Andrew Wilson, Angel Hidalgo and Matti Schmid - who was tied fourth at this year's PGA Championship - had played at the event before, while Charles Huntzinger and John Gough were chasing a maiden start after also falling short at Final Qualifying. Matt Moloney, runner-up at this year's Amateur Championship, and England's Sam Easterbrook rounded out the field as the two amateurs.

As for Wes, fortunately he has plenty more to keep him occupied despite the disappointment of missing out on qualifying for one of the sport’s biggest events. The Major Cut series, which has become a staple of the Bryan Bros content over the past few years, continues in July when the trio of Wes, brother George and Grant Horvat head to St. Andrews. Even more significant, however, will be the continuation of Your Golf Tour, with the first event at Pursell Farms being released earlier in July to a very warm reception. The first season of the tour will involve three more events over the remainder of the year, with the next to take place in the Dominican Republic at The Teeth of the Dog.
