Martin Borgmeier
Martin Borgmeier. The German Hammer. A 6’4” behemoth wearing shorts fit for a small child capable of launching the ball more than 500 yards.
Borgmeier has had a big year building his online brand, and it’s resulted in an inaugural call-up to the Internet Invitational. It looks as though he’s essentially been subbed in for Kyle Berkshire, another monster hitter of the ball but one who probably didn’t please the powers that be by regularly taking irons off the tee in last year’s event.
So what do we know about Martin Borgmeier?
Borgmeier was born in 1991 in Paderborn, Germany, but these days his official residence is little old Dallas. He turned pro in 2018, but there’s more to Marty than just being able to whack a golf ball a long way.
Before turning pro, Borgmeier earned himself a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration in 2014, and two years later he completed a Master of Science in Business Psychology. Exactly what that entails I’m not too sure, but it sounds to me as though he knows just how to trick us into liking his content.
Following on from various jobs in the corporate world, Borgmeier would eventually turn his attention to golf, specifically the long-game side of it. He won the European Long Drive Championship in 2018, but it was four years later that his crowning achievement would come when he beat none other than Bryson DeChambeau to become the World Long Drive Champion.
His winning drive that day was 426 yards, or around 388 metres, but the longest drive he has hit ‘under exhibition conditions’, whatever that means, is a ridiculous 520 yards or 475.5 metres. He’s also shown the uncanny ability to hit his putter further than nearly everyone else can hit their driver, maxing out at 327 yards or 299 metres with the Texas wedge.
What can we expect at the Internet Invitational?
There is, of course, more to golf than hitting the ball a long way, and Borgmeier’s short game doesn’t always live up to the lofty standards he sets off the tee. But hitting the ball an extra couple of hundred yards off the tee certainly helps put together a good score, and the rest of his game is good enough that he’s listed as a plus-handicap according to Handicap Tracker.
More importantly, Borgmeier is also a very likable personality (well, I like him). He’s high energy, banters reasonably effortlessly, and seems to have the ability to laugh at himself too. Expect him to be a popular addition to this year’s Internet Invitational roster, and among the better players out there.
